Tom Watkins has a lifelong interest in China, sparked by his great 4th grade teacher in Washington, DC. He has traveled and worked extensively throughout China for over two decades.
He is described by many in the Chinese community as someone who has a deep understanding of China and has sought to strengthen business, economic, educational and cultural ties between the US and China.
Tom Watkins has over 30 years of local and state government and political experience at the highest level as well deep connections and experience in the private business sector as well.
He was the China business and educational consultant to the Emmy Awarding 2 hour CBS-Detroit documentary: Building Bridges From the Great Lakes to the Great Wall. Also, he was the first non-Chinese/American to be named a honorary board member to the Chinese Association of Greater Detroit and serves on the advisory board of the University of Michigan Confucius Institute and Detroit Chinese Business Association, Wayne County Chinese Economic Development as well as serving as an international educational consultant to a K-12 Chinese school as well as an honorary professor at a Chinese University.
Brooks Patterson, Oakland County, Michigan's County Executive credits Watkins for the idea to call for all schools in Oakland County to teach Chinese language and culture in all 28 local school districts. This both benefits the students and helps make Oakland County a magnet for inbound Chinese investment.
Tom Watkins is a sought out China "expert" by electronic and print media, is a prolific author and has published over 100 articles on a wide variety of subject concerning building bridges between the United States and China.
Tom Watkins values education and was Michigan's state superintendent of schools, 2001-2005.
He has mixed his government services with work in the private sector including serving as the president and CEO of the economic council of Palm Beach County, FL., 1996-2001 and running his own educational and business consulting business in the US and China.
